A Brief History of the Honolulu HOG Chapter (1988 - Present)

The Honolulu HOG Chapter was originally conceived in 1987 by Cycle City’s acting Sales Manager whose name [is unknown at this time]. As an employee of Cycle City, he could not hold an officer position and in January 1988 Rod Carr became the first Director of the Honolulu Chapter. Rod held the position for four years through 1991 and is currently an officer with Street Bikers United Hawaii as an Advisor on the State level and as Vice President for the Oahu chapter.

The next two Directors were Richard Fagan and Mike Pesco who each held the position for two years apiece. The man who holds the record for number of years as Director of the Honolulu Chapter is Robert “Bigger is Better Bob” Gourlay. 1996 was the first of five years that Bob would lead the Chapter though not consecutively.

In 1997 Bob initiated the first Honolulu Chapter Cinco De Mayo event. That makes this past 2009 Cinco De Mayo the 12th annual event. He ruled the roost until 1999 when he wanted his Assistant Director to take over the job. Thus in 1999, Kelvin Asahina was elected Director. As his dental practice became more time consuming, he returned the Directorship to Bob in 2000 and resumed position as Assistant Director.

The next few years saw a high turn over rate of Directors including Ed Josiah, Les Chatterling, Russ Chow and Ray Simpson. Carl Kaleugher held the position for a couple of years. Butch “Huggy Bear” Hudson took over as Director and later relinquished the post to Chris “Big Country” Laye. In July 2009 Chris stepped aside and handed the reigns to the current Director - James Van Sciver.

James Van Sciver completed 2009 as Director but could not continue and the Chapter selected ________ as the Director for 2010.
